There’s not much we know about the upcoming live-action Legend of Zelda movie, but one fact is that director Wes Ball will be helming the adaptation. Ball is most well-known for directing the Maze Runner film trilogy, and he’s also tackling the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. What does Ball have in mind for the direction of Zelda? He shared some thoughts on that in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

While it’ll likely be quite some time until we get concrete details on what exactly the Legend of Zelda movie will be like, Ball does have some ideas on where he’d like to go. Thankfully, his comments should instill a bit of confidence in fans, as Ball echoes a sentiment that many fans of the franchise have shared over the years.

“(I envision) this awesome fantasy-adventure movie that isn’t like Lord of the Rings, it’s its own thing. I’ve always said, I would love to see a live-action Miyazaki. That wonder and whimsy that he brings to things, I would love to see something like that.”

[Wes Ball, Director]

Legend of Zelda diehards have long been saying they felt the franchise would be perfect for a Miyazake/Studio Ghibli style animated adaptation if it were to head to the big screen. While we may not be getting live-action or Studio Ghibli involvement, it’s still good to know that Ball wants to take inspiration from that same source.

They should take a look at the Spirited Away live show. You can get it on bluray or digital now too, it's pretty fun though longer than the original movie.

This inspires a whole lot of confidence. The director does seem to be a Zelda fan and has been wanting to work on a Zelda movie for a while now. The fact that he's trying to make it distinct from traditional live action fantasy and is directly referencing a major tonal inspiration for the recent games indicates that he knows what he is doing. Hopefully Avi Arad and Sony let him do his thing (with Nintendo's guidance) rather than forcing him to make the most cookie cutter fantasy movie possible because they are afraid of making anything distinct or interesting. In other words, hopefully they are more Spider-Verse about it and less Amazing Spider-Man 2. We will see.

The Miyazaki comment makes me think this is going to be a Breath of the Wild adaptation. It makes sense considering that's the highest selling game, widely beloved, and fairly recent. But if I had my way, I would rather have them adapt a more traditional green tunic game like OoT before adapting games set in the far future. Then again BotW is more aesthetically distinct from traditional fantasy than OoT, so if this is how they want to stand out I understand. I will take a good movie however I can get it.

I somewhat agree. I don’t think it’ll directly adapt Breath of the Wild but I think it’ll tell a story that could fit in that iteration of Hyrule and feature some of the characters from that game.

I do not think it’ll be a movie that resembles a game like Ocarina of Time for example. I would rather see a TV series adaptation of a linear game like OoT. Season 1 with a finale of Child Link pulling the Master Sword would one epic season finale cliffhanger.
