Illumination CEO seemingly denies Legend of Zelda movie rumors
So...is that a no?
Just a few days back, rumors started to swirl of Nintendo and Illumination teaming up for a second time to create a Legend of Zelda movie. While we’re used to the companies involved in these rumors keeping quiet on rumors like this, Illumination’s CEO has decided to speak up and share some thoughts.
The Wrap had the chance to chat with Chris Meledandri, the founder and CEO of Illumination, and they asked him flat-out about the Legend of Zelda movie rumors. Meledandri had a response that certainly seems to deny the rumblings…for the most part.
“I don’t know where that came from. I mean I can understand how people would surmise all sorts of things because obviously, we’ve had a great experience working together. My relationship with Nintendo now includes being on their board of directors, so I understand how people can surmise these things. But in terms of the specifics, that was just something that I’ve been hearing lots of reports. This is just about what’s next between Nintendo and Illumination.”
You might read that and think the rumor is denied completely, but there’s a lot of PR speak doing some heavy lifting there. There’s no concrete denial of the rumor in that statement, just comments on how Meledandri doesn’t know where the talk came from and he’s been hearing the same thing.
This statement certainly aims to smother the flames of this rumor fire, but there’s certainly a bit of smoke left billowing out.

11M agoI'm going to say that this means nothing given the current climate in Hollywood. Once those matters pass, I expect the next Direct thereafter for Miyamoto to pop up, thank people for coming to see the Mario movie, and announce more Nintendo IP's coming to the silver screen.

11M agoHe could have just as easily said that they have no current plans to make a LoZ movie. The fact that he didn’t makes me wonder. Like kingbroly said, directors and writers are discouraged from talking about their projects because of the strike. Meledandri even hinting at it would just give writers more fuel to their fire (which I do side with!).
