Super Mario Bros. Wonder came to Switch late last year and became an instant hit. The game now has the honor of being the fast-selling Mario title of all-time, clearly showing how Mario resonates with gamers more than ever before.

While Super Mario Odyssey was Mario’s big 3D outing on the Switch, Super Mario Bros. Wonder took things back to the 2D approach. While the characters and environments are still polygonal, the action takes place in a left-to-right, classic style. While numerous companies moved on from 2D games decades ago, Nintendo feels there’s still plenty of life left in the genre.

During a panel at GDC 2024, Nintendo’s Takashi Tezuka opened up about the two main styles of Mario games, that being 2D and 3D adventures. According to Tezuka, “People may think that 3D Mario games have taken their place,” but the longtime dev feels quite differently. Tezuka said that he thinks “everyone should enjoy them both,” following that up by asking, “do you think that’s too much to ask?”

I agree! I think of them almost as two different game series. I couldn't imagine a world without both of them.

I agree! And the same logic should apply to the Zelda series as well. No reason we shouldn't have and be able to enjoy both.
