Vanillaware’s track record is extremely impressive, as the studio keeps releasing hit after hit. It shouldn’t be that surprising, as the studio puts everything they have into each game, and that’s meant as a literal statement. Not only do the devs aim to incorporate every idea that makes sense, they also pour every last penny into development. It’s a gamble, but with Unicorn Overlord, its paid off once again.

While Unicorn Overlord has released to great critical and commercial success, that doesn’t mean Vanillaware is 100% happy with the final product. The dev team has admitted that there isn’t much to regret with the title, but there is one idea that they would have liked to implement, but it didn’t come to be.

In an interview with TheGamer, Vanillaware revealed that they were considering a gameplay mechanic where bits of character armor would break off as they took damage in battle. It’s not a brand-new mechanic that would change the flow of battle, but it would certainly make fights a tad more immersive. For whatever reason, the team never got to implement that feature, so it remains an idea to revisit in another game down the road.

For those who are unfamiliar, Unicorn Overlord combines the timeless tactical RPG genre with overworld exploration and innovative battle system for a unique epic fantasy experience in the iconic Vanillaware style. You’ll traverse a vibrant world, assemble units and direct them into exquisitely animated battles. Perform heroic deeds and grow renown throughout the five nations all while you cultivate a grand army with over 60 unique characters, from humans and elves to massive beasts and heavenly angels.
