Detective Pikachu just had its triumphant return with the appropriately titled Detective Pikachu Returns on Switch. If you’re curious how exactly this series kicked off and where it might go next, a new interview with Famitsu could clear a few things up for you.

In the interview, producers Tsunekazu Ishihara and Hiroyuki Jinnai discuss how the original idea for Detective Pikachu came to be, as well as whether or not there are any plans for future entries. Check out the relevant portions below, as translated by Nintendo Everything:

Hiroyuki Jinnai: After development finished on PokePark, when we thought about what kind of game to make next, we set our sights on creating an adventure game, which had not been done for Pokemon spin-off titles yet. However, just trying to create a normal one didn’t seem very interesting. While considering various ideas, we thought of adding some spice to it with the element of a “talking middle-aged man Pikachu”, and that led to the creation of Detective Pikachu.

Hiroyuki Jinnai: The story of Tim, Pikachu and Harry will come to a close. However, since everyone in the staff loves this talking middle-aged Pikachu, there could be other developments following different threads…?

Tsunekazu Ishihara: We can’t promise anything at this point in time, but if Detective Pikachu Returns is received well and there’s a huge demand from the people, there could be room for more spin-offs as such.

It sounds like the specific plot that’s been featured in the current Detective Pikachu games has an end point, but that doesn’t mean there couldn’t be more adventures in the future. Could Detective Pikachu return again, or even venture out into other genres? There’s no telling how long we’ll have to wait for another new entry, but at least the dev team is up for the task!

Detective Pikachu Returns was not received well by players or critics..and I doubt the game sold that great either..so I don't think there will be a Detective Pikachu 3. So hopefully they make Pokepark 3 instead.
