Nintendo is considering steps to make the NX region free

Iwata also said that going region free on current Nintendo platforms isn't really an option. So no go for current platforms, but the future definitely has a chance.

Here's a more detailed look at what Iwata said...

Removing region-locking from current game machines presents various issues, so we don't consider that to be very realistic. However, regarding NX, given the customer feedback and proposals from the market, while nothing has been decided yet, we're currently investigating internally what problems there would be in realizing it. You can think of that as the current situation. I understand your desire, so I'd like to look at it optimistically going forward.

This is great news. Hopefully they finally release an update for the 3DS in order to make it region free too

Considering? Just make it region free already

Agreed, I would like to play other region games without the hassle.

nintendo should just do what sony does and make it region free but if the developers want they can lock a game (very few have done it).  its not the ideal situation but this way nintendo is free from any backlash from fans or the developers on the issue since it would be totally up to the game makers.

I always thought it was stupid, but I honestly never really cared about region locking because I can't read Japanese and don't really want a game I can't understand. It's more just an issue of I wish the games were localized. Until now that NoA had the bright idea to only give us the New 3DS XL. If it werent for region locking I would order a regular New 3DS in a heartbeat, I have no desire to get the XL. Sucks they can't can't take it out of current systems.

well, if they already say that they consider NX to be region free, it would be a huge disappointment if NX will be region locked in the end.
make it happen, nintendo!

Personally I don't give two shits about region locking. But i'm happy for the people who do. But we wouldn't need region free systems if we lived in a perfect world if every game got localized and released everywhere on the same day but alas we don't! Though I'm still holding out hope for a localized Rhythm Heaven Best...

With the IARC jointventure of game rating boards making games (at least on the digital market) regio free got a lot easier - eventhough the CERO is not part of it yet, others like the PEGI, USK, ESRB and ACB are - centralizing the rating process to "one" place, making it more manageable to get rid of regio locking.

Though considering how few import titles are actually good I usually find region-free consoles to be a shallow way to placate whiny idiots

What steps? just do it.

I'm glad to hear they are finally listening to all of their more vocal fans.
