Splatoon hits 1 million sold - official press release

REDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Nintendo has hauled up its nets, tallied its catch and crossed another milestone. Sales of Splatoon, the new squid-based game for Nintendo’s Wii U home console, have crossed 1 million worldwide, according to Nintendo’s internal figures. That figure includes more than 476,000 physical and digital units sold in the Americas, more than 368,000 sold in Japan, more than 230,000 sold in Europe and an additional 20,000 sold in Australia and New Zealand.

“Ever since Splatoon launched on May 29 in the United States, we’ve seen thousands of people go online to have fun in this colorful, chaotic competition,” said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. “This milestone puts us in a nice position as we prepare to launch 11 more exclusive Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games before the end of the year, plus amiibo, digital offerings and games from our third-party partners.”

Splatoon multiplayer pits teams of four online players against one another as they try to splatter a majority of the playing area with their team’s colorful ink. Players can transform into squids and swim through pools of their own ink to move faster or maneuver up walls to access hard-to-reach areas.

Note that broadband Internet access is required for online play. Remember that Wii U features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other features, visit http://www.nintendo.com/wiiu.

Holy crap this is legitimately great

*Holy carp

Really happy about this. Hopefully it encourages Nintendo to take a chance with new IP and market it properly more often when it makes sense.

Well the-Americas got almost half of that, but surprising to see Japan so close on it really. Very nice. Back when million-sellers meant new packaging and possibly cheaper prices, did they count it as a million-seller for their region, or worldwide? Definitely would be nice to see them as million-sellers in their own regions anyway...

I didn't need to be a million seller. It just needed to be a popular game that was also old...

But since the games need to be old, they're not gonna do this now.

Not sure if it changed now, but back in the GCN era the US required it to sell at least a million for Nintendo to consider it a Players' Choice game. Kind of wish they bring that back.

Sony required it to be 700K in sales at that same timeframe.

Wow. Already at 1.1 million and counting! I'm happy it's doing well because the game is definitely deserving.

368k in japan ? that's huge, nothing elsewhere will reach that. Come on Europe, we can do better

No one in Europe has a wiiu unfortunately.

In France everybody has a Wii U. Really, France is Nintendoland.

As far as new IP's go hopefully this means: More giving people what they want and less Codename Steams.

Personally, I'm more hopeful for similar levels of advertising for other new games and IPs and less just releasing them and wishing them luck.

Codename Steam is actually pretty fun it's just hard as nails though. But yeah I'm happy for Splatoon. This means hopefull more new big character based IP's from Nintendo as well as Splatoon becoming a new franchise and not just a one and done.

Splatoon was never promised to be a big hit, neither was STEAM. since both were on the same playing field going out, we could have never suspected who would be more widely received.

If Nintendo knew what would sell like this we would not have gotten STEAM, nor Advance Wars for that matter. It is the inherent risk of a new IP.

Excellent news!

Spoiler

So at a glance that means it has outsold Pikmin, Wario, Mario & Sonic, Donkey Kong, Captain Toad, Wii Fit, and Wii Sports.

Bring on Spla2oon.

more than 368,000 sold in Japan
That's good numbers from just one country! Almost as much as the one for the Americas.

I hope they expand upon Splatoon. It's such a good game!

Pretty hyped to try out Splatoon, might pick it up soon. It's awesome there are so many people playing, it means getting in a game easier and a bigger community.

I bought it, so great ^_^

Good numbers for The Americas but Japanese numbers are still the most impressive. Seems Splatoon had quite some digital sales too.

It's nice to see a new IP as fun and charming as Splatoon doing well.
