Switch firmware update 4.0 now available, adds video capture for select games, pre-load games, and more

Improvements Included in Version 4.0.0 (Distributed 10/18/2017)

Added the following system functionality

Capture video on select games

- To capture video, hold down the Capture Button during gameplay
- Up to maximum of the previous 30 seconds will be saved in the Album. You can trim the beginning and end of each clip, and post to Facebook and Twitter.
- As of October 18th, 2017, this feature is compatible with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS, and Splatoon 2

Select from 12 new Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild icons for your user

- To edit your user icon, head to your My Page on the top left of the Home Menu > Profile

Transfer user and save data to another system

- To transfer, head to System Settings > Users > Transfer Your User and Save Data

Pre-purchase option on Nintendo eShop

- A pre-purchase option will be available for certain games. This option allows pre-load of the game to your system for quicker play when the game is released.
- This feature will be supported by future game releases

News channel updates

- The news feed has been updated with a new look.
- Unfollowing a channel will remove that channel's content from the news feed and following the channel again will make it reappear.

Match software version with a group of local users

- To create a group, head to the software's Options > Software Update > Match Version with Local Users
- Everyone's software will be updated to match the most recent version in the group
- All users must be on system menu version 4.0.0 or later to view and join a group

General system stability improvements to enhance the user's experience, including:

- Changed the specification which hid wireless networks using TKIP security from the network search results. Wireless networks using TKIP security will now display in search results as a grayed-out selection instead of not being displayed
- The Nintendo Switch console supports WEP, WPA-PSK(AES), and WPA2-PSK(AES). If your router is using a different security type (e.g. WPA-PSK(TKIP)), you will need to change this security type within your router's settings.

Thanks to all who sent this in!

The PlayStation 4 is actually recording your whole session during playing. A whole processor was wasted for just the social features of the Console. Yes I can release my whole playthrough of Final Fantasy XV and share it with tons of people who will never watch it. It‘s cool for people who need this, but for me, it‘s a waste of resources.

It‘s not like Nintendo will copy this feature now. It‘s meant for short clips perfect for the use on Twitter. Maybe this is more like a test-run to see how this feature is used by the Switch-Owners. Don‘t forget you need a lot of horsepower to actually record lot‘s of data. Like I said, the PlayStation 4 needs a separate CPU for this. So, before calling it a joke, you should compare the Hardwareof both systems. Don‘t wanna offend here, but it‘s not a fair comparison.

I just want to save my own videos onto micro SD card. I want to watch anime on my switch. I don't give a rats ass about sharing.

OH MY GOOODDDD!!! I'm so happy right now. I saw the notification pop up on my Switch screen and literally screamed like a school girl. I've wanted pre-load and video recording for so LONG!

Lots to love here. Lots to love.

Major update!! Thanks Nintendo

Kass is the only BotW character among the ones featured in user icons who doesn't have an amiibo... yet?! Please Nintendo, I need an amiibo of my birb husbando!!

Video capture is also really cool, hopefully they make it compatible with more games soon.

It’s up to third party developers if they allow the switch to capture game footage.

Yeah but there are a few first party games missing too.

Only 30 seconds and only select games. Leave it to Nintendo to add half a feature... -_-

Maybe one day we’ll be able to stream for 5 minutes!

Actually this is not Nintendo’s fault. Every developer needs to give permit to use video capture on their games. So we just wait for third party developers to say yes, and thats it.

Also remember that even on the other platforms the publisher and/or developer will specifically block certain sections of a game from being captured. Most often this is done during certain cutscenes to prevent spoilers. For example in the games Yakuza 0 and Kiwami the entire final chapters in each have the recording feature blocked.

I’m fine with certain things being blocked, but being limited to 30 seconds is ridiculous. About as lame as not being able to stream in 2017.

Maybe get third parties on board before launching the feature, if that is indeed why we can’t make clips of games like Golf Story or Axiom Verge.

- Up to maximum of the previous 30 seconds will be saved in the Album.

LOL, and my PS4 lets me save up to an hour of non-blocked footage if I so desire, with an hour of footage only taking up a puny 2 GB or so. There's no excuse to not have it at least go to the 10 minute mark. What a joke of a recording feature. I'd prefer if we could upload the in-game replays from Arms and MK8D directly to youtube like you could with Wii U MK8. Guess I'll keep using my capture device for the time being.

Again, even if the system isn't capable of recording a full hour (which would be understandable) you'd think it could record up to 10 minutes, or the length of a full replay from MK8D and SSB... Like the Wii U could do just fine.

Well for Mario Kart and Smash Bros, all the game is doing is replaying back a string of inputs at specific times and just playing them back while recording.

True, that is a fair point. It's a handy way to save storage space. Still wouldn't make the addition of a youtube upload feature in MK8D/ARMS a bad idea though

STABILITYYYYYY!!!!!!

Switch is slowly getting there features wise. Achievements, messaging feature, Virtual Console, Cloud Saving, Save data transfer from microsd to system, Themes, Multimedia apps are next in line and I can't wait. I'm extremely happy with this update and am already wanting more!

It will be a fully featured console by the time Nintendo is ready to announce the next hardware. 😂

Nintendo in 2020: we’ve finally added Netflix support on Switch!

I understand it's different on other system but IIRC streaming from high end pc last box onlive style was also presented as part of the package. There was that download and start playing also , it's like just a start screen now . I mean I don't want to believe anyone would waste cpu power on simply recording one hour, so it must have been done for something else. Oh streaming, yeah sure, that's a thing. Please do stream, but yeah that is just not like everyone will do.

anyway it's a new thing to me, and it records after the fact ? I'm so going to record those "your rank will not be ... early in the game" . It happened only one time after the update but still

So my Nintendo Switch is being repaired and a few days before this update they informed me that they couldn't transfer my save data before repairing the console so all of my save data was lost, so im guessing nintendo doesn't tell their repair departments when updates are coming. Otherwise I wouldn't have lost my save data. I await getting my console back to start playing through the 20 plus games again....

Ohhhhh..... 30 seconds. Impressive!

That's sarcasm.

That's pretty cool that they added this feature. I will for sure try it out!
