What a time to be alive... where Mario and Zelda have to fight for the same awards.

I hope for Mario to win. And while I am overall not THAT ultra hyped about which game being Game of The Year, I sorta realy hope Horizon doesn't win, at least.

Personally.

What's PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds? Is that like an online game like World of Tanks or Rocket League?

At least Nier:Automata has two shots both the music and story are very good.

I find very funny how most of the Family nominations are Nintendo games. Is one game short of being a Nintendo category.

The handheld category also feels like it should be a 3DS category. I wonder if Samus Returns will win that one.

It has a really cool concept: 100 players(?) are dropped onto this map and fight to survive. Once you're killed, you're out.

I haven't played it personally, but it seems really interesting.

Wasn't that the idea of MAG?

Best Chinese Game? That's a really odd category.

Also, it's really weird that a game that isn't even finished is in the running for GOTY (Battlegrounds). Sets a bad precedent for the future I think. We might end up seeing even more unfinished games nominated, and devs will start to think it's okay to never finish developing a game, and to just leave it in an Early Access state.

And I do want to make the distinction that finishing development of a game, then expanding its content later via DLC is different from just never moving a game out of its beta state. I'm referring to the latter in my above statements.

As long as the nomination (and potential award) are given to the game based on its current state (and not what it might become by the time it's finished), I don't think it's a problem. Even though it's technically unfinished, PUBG is still great as-is.

Yeah, "Best Chinese Game" caught me off guard too. Why single out one country's games? Unless that's like a genre now...

It's a shame they don't consider December releases. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 would likely have been nominated for a few awards.

BOTW is the better game and more revolutionary in my opinion. It’s a Zelda game that isn’t a Zelda game.

Odessy is an evolution on previous games and is a bloody fantastic game that I love so much but it still follows the Super Mario formula laid down with SM64. There isn’t as much new in Odyssey than there is with BOTW.

Also why is BOTW in a music category? It’s got very very little music and definitely nothing memorable.

tl;dr
Both games are unbelievably fantastic but BOTW beats Odyssy for me

Also why is BOTW in a music category? It’s got very very little music and definitely nothing memorable.

This Zelda may not really have music well suited for an OST, but there was an incredible amount of thoughts put into its soundtrack's design, and how it subtly change depending on the context.

It's hard for me to choose between BOTW and Odyssey. Both have provided a LOT of fun for me and are well-designed and polished. It feels like it's the N64 era and we got Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time in the same year. Both games are THAT prolific.

With Overwatch winning so many awards years ago, I wouldn't be surprised to hear PUBG winning that show's Game of the Year awards...

...but then again, a DLC expansion won the best RPG award 2 years ago in the same event, so I'd be lying if I would state to be disappointed.

How is Arms a fighting game yet Pokken DX isn't? Especially since the former launched incomplete? (Moreso than Splatoon 2 which i'll at least give credit for)

"Best anticipated game" has to be the absolute worst category I've ever seen for any awards show.

Anyway, Zelda will win GOTY. Deserves to, at least.

Mario better win this else Nintendoom to us all!

Zelda VS Horizon I imagine here

BotW is sweeping most categories for me, but if Cuphead doesn't win best art direction and best score this year I'll be very upset at voters.

Glad to see games that you can play on the Switch in so many categories.

Apologies for the comment section novella. I've placed it in a spoiler tag to make it easier to scroll down the page. This is long even for me.

Some answers for you.
All the actual video game awards in this awards ceremony are chosen by video game publications. Perhaps this is why a game like Her Story wins over a 100 hour game like The Witcher. Game critics are playing several games at a time and maybe the 15 people at IGN are more likely to complete Her Story over The Witcher. Or maybe they just preferred it over the other.

The trending Gamer award is chosen by the community. So it depends on how much the fans decide to vote.

Ongoing Game refers to games that are continually seeing updates.

Either way, Reggie is going home happy.

How is Zelda not a part of "Most Anticipated Game"? It was hyped beyond all belief!

This is for upcoming games though. Zelda won last year. :P

Oh. That's... kinda weird, but understandable.

Best artistic style...

Zelda vs CupHead!

Zelda being a Ghibli movie as agame (visually) and CupHead like a fine 30's cartoon.... Holy crap!!!!! I can't choose.

They should make a Splatfest for this one :D
