A preview event for Valkyria Chronicles 4 was held in Japan, and some of the dev team were on-hand to answer some questions about the title. You can see a summary of the info they shared below.
- game has been in development for two years
- the planning phase started a long time before
- grenadiers were added to the game as a means to include a method of interception beyond visual range and more explosions
- the main theme of the game is willpower to accomplish one’s mission
- the challenge of an environment covered in snow is perfect for that
- only about half of the maps are snowy
- compared to Valkyria Chronicles 2 and 3, the depth of all characters has been enhanced
- there are also a lot more characters compared to 2 and 3
- the game includes six characters among grenadiers
- fencers are not included in the game, and will not be added as DLC
- Valkyria Chronicles 4 are bigger, and fencers aren’t well suited for that
- characters from the original Valkyria Chronicles are included in bonus DLC
- Kurt and the rest of the cast of Valkyria 3 won’t appear
- this game happens after the fourth in the timeline, so justifying their presence would be difficul
- command point costs for an action with a tank has been reduced from two to one
- this is because players weren’t able to use tanks much in previous titles of the series
- a separate release of the bonus DLC (pre-order bonus and limited edition bonus) is not planned
- there will be other DLC released at a later date
- the devs want us to enjoy the battlefield drama, especially through the game's story
- new version of the CANVAS rendering engine was developed targeting the performance of the PS4
- the team can’t say yet what the Switch version will look like, but they’re doing their best
