Splatoon franchise breaks 10 million sold in 3 years

Splatoon and Splatoon 2 have been quite a hit, and the series has certainly cemented itself as a major Nintendo brand. Between Splatoon and Splatoon 2, the total sales for the franchise are just shy of 11 million units sold. Quite a huge accomplishment when you consider how poorly the Wii U was received, and how little time the Switch has been on the market!

He didnt say how poorly Splatoon was received on the Wii U. He mentioned how poorly the Wii U as a console did. It's fairly unheard of to launch a new IP on a failing console and for it to have 40% retention rate.

"Quite a huge accomplishment when you consider how poorly the Wii U was received".

That's so not true. Splatoon sold just shy of 5 million copies on Wii U, 4.93million as of March this year.

So it counts for over 45% of the franchises overall sales. It was announced as the most successful home console intellectual property in Japan since Wii Sports. And that's where Splatoon performs best.

Edit: Sorry, I misread that as Splatoon didn't sell well on Wii U.

I'd already corrected myself immediately, you must have missed that, but thanks.

ARMS should have been a great new IP a la Splatoon.

Don’t get me wrong, I love it, but the lack of a proper story mode, and improved number of fighters and more game modes makes me agree with those who consider it a shallow experience.

ARMS has done well for what it is, a new fighting game IP in 2017. I doubt a story mode would be drawing in many more fans. A shooter like Splatoon has much broader appeal for today’s gamers. If ARMS had come out in the arcade days of Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, it would be legendary by now.

Good on Splatoon. It’s not my cuppa tea gameplay wise or artstyle wise but happy those that do like it get to enjoy it

Same here. Not really into it as much as everyone but still.

One of my favorite Wii U and Switch games. Couldn’t be happier that it’s such a huge success!
