UK software sales analysis for the week ending July 14th, 2018 - Details on Crash Bandicoot, LEGO The Incredibles, Octopath Traveler, and Captain Toad

We've already shared the Top 20 software sales for the UK during the week ending July 14th, 2018, but now we have some specific insight into the top titles. The top of the charts featured games that were very close to one another in terms of total sales, and Octopath Traveler's performance was actually the strongest when you consider revenue made.

Crash Bandicoot: N.Sane Trilogy

- No. 1 in UK for the third week
- Xbox One version is performing marginally better than the Switch version
- this is something very specific to the UK market, with the Switch edition performing strongest across EMEA

LEGO The Incredibles

- No. 2 debut
- comes in below last year's LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 but ahead of LEGO Ninjago: The Movie
- 46% of sales came on PS4, 30% on Xbox One and 23% on Switch

Octopath Traveler

- No. 3 debut
- almost double the debut sales of Bravely Default
- more than double Bravely Second debut sales
- if charts were by revenue, Octopath Traveler is No.1 due to its higher price tag
- No. 1 single-platform title for the week

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

- No. 4 debut
- Switch version accounted for 93% of the sales, while the 3DS version accounted for 7%
- opening week sales were 40% lower than what the Wii U version managed

Captain Toad debuting worse than the Wii U version is probably down to the Switch having many many more games out than the Wii U did when it’s version released.

I'm surprised the 3DS version only sold 7% considering I've been told many times on this site that the large install base of 3DS players still buy NEW 3DS games in 2018. Huh..

Apart from Smash, has any other game released on both 3DS and Switch (or Wii U) on the same day? I feel that probably hurt the 3DS version.

I know games like DKCR and Yoshis Wooly World and Mario Maker came to 3DS but it was significantly later than their console counterparts.

Not sure why folks on this site would say that. Pokemon US / UM and Metroid last year to a lesser extent were the last new 3ds titles to sell decently. It's mostly the classic catalog that's selling.

No. 4 for Captain Toad sounds good until you get the breakdown of the figures. It's the height of the summer so any new game is bound to place high. That it sold 40% less than the Wii U version says a lot.

Edit: I just remembered something. Captain Toad on Wii U had a soft launch. Its release was a bit of a mess in Ireland and the UK. I remember some retailers had it on sale just in time for Christmas and some had it just after Christmas. Meaning its sales were very disjointed which actually makes the Switch debut numbers pretty bad by comparison.
