Animal Crossing: New Horizons - updated website confirms save data situation

Nintendo has clarified its stance regarding save data and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. This is what they state on the official European websites...

Important notes regarding save data

- This game does not support the Save Data Cloud functionality of Nintendo Switch Online. However, the ability to recover Animal Crossing: New Horizons save data from the server in the event of console failure, loss or theft will be available to Nintendo Switch Online members sometime in the future.

- Animal Crossing: New Horizons does not support the ability to transfer your save file from one Nintendo Switch console to another.

Well, there you go. No local or online saves in the traditional sense of the world. Now, it does seems like some sort of backup will be available later, but nothing concrete has been announced.
