Spiritfarer is going to be one of those games where you just know you'll be balling your eyes out. Keep the tissues close for this one. While death is going to be a core subject of the game, it's not meant to be a downer of a game. Thunder Lotus Games art director Jo-Annie Gauthier explained to Polygon.

“It plays a lot into the desire to make death not so scary. It’s meant to reassure people.”

You'll come across a lot of spirits on your journey through Spiritfarer, and those spirits are very near and dear to the dev team. Gauthier mentioned that many of the spirits are based on loved ones of the dev team who have passed away, making for a loving tribute, and a great way to process their passing.
