NPD has shared some data on game spend in the U.S. for Q1 of 2020, and things were absolutely huge. As a matter of fact, a new record was set for the industry, with the video games business generating $10.86 billion during the first quarter. This is up 9% as compared to the same period last year.

Spending on content alone reached $9.58 billion during Q1, up 11% year-over-year. Big games during Q1 include Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and Grand Theft Auto V. While hardware sales were down for Xbox One and PS4, those falls were offset by the Switch's success. Thanks to the Switch's popularity, hardware overall saw a 2% increase to $773 million compared to Q1 2019.
