WayForward has considered taking Shantae into 3D and VR, along with a more musical focus

Every single installment in the Shantae series has been a 2D affair, but could that ever change? Does WayForward have aspirations to bring Shantae into the third dimension? USGamer asked WayForward's Matt Bozon this very question, and his answer was quite interesting.

We’ve talked for years about taking Shantae into a 3D polygonal world. But that’s never happened. I can’t say if this generation will be “the one,” but it’s something we’ll probably consider again when the time is right. I’d also love to play around with some kind of Shantae adventure in VR, or something musical in nature. We’ll have to wait and see. Anything can happen!

It would certainly be interesting to see Shantae head in any one of those directions. Whether it'll actually happen is something we'll just have to sit back and cross our fingers for!
