Hideki Kamiya suggests that fans should "reset and forget about" Bayonetta 3 so that the eventual reveal will be a "nice surprise"

An update is still expected for sometime in 2021.

Ever since the announcement of Bayonetta 3 at The Game Awards 2017, fans have been clamoring for an update on the game's development. No news has been shared since then, and some are concerned that the release may still be a long ways away.

In an interview with VGC, PlatinumGames director Hideki Kamiya gave some advice on where our minds should be at while we wait for official news to come out. Although an update for Bayonetta 3 is expected by the end of 2021, he suggests that since "it's driving fans crazy," they should "reset and forget about Bayonetta 3." Check out his exact comments from the TGC interview below, and click over to their article for more interesting PlatinumGames related tidbits and info.

VGC: Kamiya, here’s the inevitable Bayonetta 3 question: You were recently quoted as saying you’d like to provide a public update on the game this year. Is that right?

Kamiya: "It’s not really our position to say, but… it’s January. We’ve got to have something come out, right? I guess it’s safe to expect that something will come out. There’s still a lot of the year left is what I’m saying."

VGC: By “update”, do you mean something more substantial than another CGI logo?

Kamiya: "(Laughs) I understand it’s driving the fans crazy! In light of that, my suggestion would be that maybe we should all reset and forget about Bayonetta 3. Then when something finally does happen, it will be a nice surprise, won’t it?"

Announced too soon or development issues? Hard to tell considering Bayonetta 2 did show more from announcement to release.

Makes me wonder if the idea is to announce it close to it's release date. Perhaps a full showcase considering the IP hasn't been as commercially successful as more recent platinum games.

both

Hashimoto left PG and that leave them without a director AND concept artist, however some of the best games of all time had one or two big troubles during development so we just need to keep our fingers crossed!

And we are still about 5 months away from it surpassing LoU2 in terms of time between announcement and release. Unfortunately some companies still do that.

Nintendo has been doing very well on that regard, besides Zelda. Metroid Prime 4 had development issues, which if could be predicted wouldn't happen, so...

Jeez, that doesn't sound good at all. I may be reading too much into it, but what I take from that is, any reveal won't be happening until late into the year and it probably won't be releasing in 2021.

Poeple....

A lot has happened at Platinum the last years. Tokyo office which probably took time to move into and get settled and all, the deal with Tencent which gave them the chance to self publish which probably means restructuring or at least re doing som things within the company. And then there's this little biological thingy that isn't even a living thing (well, biologists are still debating that one) called a virus raging around the world. Seems like Japanese developers were hit harder since they had basically never worked from home which meant more time lost for development. Add to all this that Platinum had said they change up some big things in Bayonetta 3's development which probably also took it's time and effort. And we have no idea how far in development the game was when it was announced. Plus Ninty really likes the short announcement to release window thing, so they might give us a Direct for this 3 or 4 months before it's out.

The game is coming when it's ready. Rather have it at it's best of quality than forced to be released too early as too many games do these days. All in due time, and that says I who is batshit fucking stoked for anything for this game. Still my moist anticipated game I now of being in development.

Who are you addressing? No one here seems to be acting like that.

Non here, really. Not in this thread that is, but the internet in general. I should have pointed that out. Stuff like "Game is cancelled!" is one thing but when I read "Fuck Kamiya! and Platinum!" I get a bit bored.

Again, was nothing personal to anyone here. All the kids are good here.

In an alternate universe, Bayonetta 3 hasn’t been announced and “fans” are still clamouring for news about it. You can’t win against stupid.

And now people are complaining that Kamiya is blocking people on twitter for this comment. People say he is trolling by blocking people, but sometimes I think he is just blocking the trolls.

I'll gladly wait a year or two more, as long as I get the quality the game is supposed to be. And the above I mentioned, of course =)

Kamiya blocks anyone on a whim, there's even a twitter account dedicated to all the people he blocked.

He blocked me years ago when all I did was say I was enjoying Bayonetta 2 even more than the original.

Yeah I know he's famous for it, but sometimes he must be damn bored of all the nagging he gets too. Specially when it comes to Bayonetta 3.

Did you write that in English or Japanese?

English.

All it takes for Kamiya to block you is to say something that even slightly annoys him or offends his pride. I'm going to guess because he didn't direct Bayo 2 he inferred that I thought someone did a better job than him and he took offense.

In retrospect, I think Bayo 1 is a tighter, more focussed game than 2, but Kamiya really needs to calm down. :p

He can block people for just writing in English I hear xD He still must be batshit tired of people nagging him about Bayo 3. Even all the "Fuck you Kamiya" comments are getting boring now, even for me =) Then again he has a huge ego, and people with huge egos tend to be pretty sensitive, really.

Bayo 1 is a tighter game indeed. You ahve to really fight for it, but Bayo 2 is also great. The gameplay there was a bit more streamlined which kinda made it a bit more, dare I say, casual. I hope they either mix them up in 3, or do, what they seem to be doing anyway, take tad bit of a different approach.

Personally I play Bayonetta 1 and 2 as one game, really. After I finsih the first I jump straight to the sequel.

I think all of Gonintendo now knows I am deadly excited for BAyonett 3, But I'll also wait for it since I want it to be the best it can be. I rather nag Kamiya for something else...But I'm too lazy anyways Smile

The Umbral climax is what unbalanced Bayo 2, it was way too OP and made the torture attacks mostly redundant, making combat less tactical and more button-mashy. Why waste meter and use torture attacks to take out one foe at a time when you can just wait til the meter is full and go full ham?

I still love Bayo 2 as much as the original for the sheer exhilarating spectacle of it all though. There's no denying the brilliance of the setpieces and boss fights.

Indeed. I bet they listened to the fans, and themeslves, and make Bayo 3 a bit more like the first game. The Bayonetta games are by far some of my all time favourite gaming experiences adn I have (here comes the cliche talk) have been gaming for over 30 years so... Smile

Even if Bayonetta 2 is a bit more streamlined in combat it does deliver in so many other ways. I think we're on the same page here, Teynard.

Anyway, a bit on-topic, even when Bayonetta 3 is my moist anticipated game taht we know is in development (by far) I can understand that there probably are many reasons why they haven't showed it yet, so I'll just wait it out. And I am sure, when they finally show it off, we'll be jumoing through the roof of joy!
