Hackers discover unused TV-out option on the DS Lite

A neat secret!

The DS Lite launched all the way back in 2006, but fans of the platform are still discovering secrets hiding in the hardware 15+ years later.

A group of hackers/modders that were tinkering with the DS Lite have discovered an interesting feature. For some reason, the system has a TV-out option built in. You won't find this on the original DS or DSi, but it's hiding deep within the DS Lite. This feature is disabled on boot, but with a bit of hardware/software hacking, it can still be accessed.

As you see at the top of this post, the option allows you to output the top screen of your DS Lite to your TV. Sure, it's not the prettiest or most sensible way to play the DS Lite, but it's interesting nonetheless. You have to wonder why just the DS Lite included this feature, and why Nintendo hid it away!

Thanks to Sligeach_eire for the heads up!

I would have liked this feature on my DS Lite back then, it shows that it's not difficult. I've often said Nintendo could have done this with their previous handhelds, but they may have had concerns about muddying the waters, and wanted to keep the handheld and console markets distinctly separate. Now that Nintendo have only one platform, they don’t need to concern themselves about that anymore.

I wonder if this was planned to be used for capturing video and screenshots instead of dedicated capture units that Nintendo produced for media outlets.

That's what I am guessing. An unused debugging feature, or capture feature like you mentioned.
Why would Nintendo plan a TV out feature for customers on a DS anyway.

That's awesome, would have been a fun feature. Perhaps the seeds of the Wii U/Switch concept sprouted from this?

I have to admit now that the switch is out I basically never play my 3ds anymore. I don't even want to turn on the hardware anymore. Like there are games that I would play there but the fact that it is on the 3ds and that it seems so outdated and unpractical makes me actually find something else to play on my switch instead. A feature like that would definitely help.
