Dear Reader:
My Friend Pedro's developer explains how the game's banana guide came to be
My Friend Pedro is gory, weird, silly, strange, and all-out fun. In a game where almost everything is over-the-top, there's one element that stands above all the rest. The main character in the game has a banana sidekick that not only teaches you how to play, but is crucial to the story. How on earth did such a wacky character come to be? DeadToast developer Victor Ågren explains in a Gamasutra interview.
“As I was wrapping up the development of the original Flash version of My Friend Pedro, I needed some sort of tutorial helper to appear and help you progress through the game, and also provide some sort of weird, simple substitute for a story. I wasn't very precious about how the game would turn out and thought ‘bananas are easy to animate’ — and so the banana was born. It also turned out to be a good eye catcher when used in key art, and it signaled to players that the game doesn't take itself too serious.”
