Not exactly smooth sailing

GN Version 5.0

Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm is making its way to the Switch in the near future, following up a successful port of the original game to Switch as well. Obviously Oceanhorn 2 is bigger and better in every way, and it's more taxing on hardware as well.

As Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm was a mobile game first, the dev team wanted to target 30 FPS to make sure as many mobile devices could play it as possible. They also wanted to hit that mark on Switch, but it was going to take some extra work. The team's first shot at getting Oceanhorn 2 up-and-running on Switch resulted in just 13 FPS.

Our first Switch iteration was only running at 13 fps. On iOS, our target during development was 30 fps. When Apple Arcade was first announced, it wasn't clear which device would be the oldest (it ended up being the iPhone 6s). Targeting 30 fps allowed us to maintain a high resolution, and most importantly, stable battery life.

The team had a lot of work to hit that 30 FPS goal, but they made it happen. If you want to learn about the tricks and dev work they did to arrive at 30 FPS on Switch, you can check out their development feature here.
