The Nier: Automata anime adaptation, Nier: Automata Ver1.1a, premiered recently on the Crunchyroll streaming service. The video game was well known for its complex ideas and storytelling, and it appears that the anime is no different. After just two episodes, fans have already discovered and deciphered some mysterious hidden codes. The codes in question appear briefly before and after commercial breaks, when the show displays a quick animation (or “eye catch”) to signal that the show is about to return. Check out the image below to see what this looks like.

Eagle-eyed fans noticed the strange strings of numbers and letters flashing on screen during these sequences, and were able to translate them using a hexidecimal converter online. As of now, the following messages have been unscrambled:

Episode 1:

“An android is a being that repeats life and death.”

“Will the chain of reincarnation bring salvation or collapse?”

Episode 2:

“How is it different from human intelligence?”

Will these messages add up to something truly meaningful by the time the show is over, or are they simply easter eggs for dedicated viewers? Knowing Nier and its creator Yoko Taro, the former is pretty likely. Stay tuned to see what other secrets turn up as the rest of the episodes air!
