RUMOR: Switch successor due out Q1 2025 (UPDATES)

A little longer than anticipated?

Nintendo hasn’t made a peep yet about what comes after the Switch. We know that they’ve been working on a successor for years, but outside of that basic knowledge, Nintendo hasn’t shared any details. While we wait for Nintendo to come forth with information, the insiders and rumormongers continue to share supposed details, and today brings us release timing info. (h/t VGC)

Both Eurogamer and Brazilian games journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe are stating that Nintendo’s Switch successor will launch sometime in early 2025; specifically sometime within the current 2024 fiscal year. That would put the platform out sometime before March 2025 comes to a close. This info supposedly comes from multiple sources with intimate knowledge of the hardware.

While nothing has been set in stone for Switch’s follow-up, previous rumors claimed the system would be out sometime in 2024. The shift to early 2025 has not been explained, but insiders believe the move would allow Nintendo to really solidify the hardware’s launch lineup and first year of software. Should we hear any more details on this rumor, we’ll make sure to keep you posted.

UPDATE: Bloomberg reached out to Nintendo for a comment on this situation, and a Nintendo rep said the company has “nothing to comment on.”

UPDATE 2: Nintendo has apparently told some publishers not to expect the Switch’s successor to launch until March 2025 “at the earliest.”

Seems quite plausible.

And the reason makes sense too...making sure it has a good launch lineup is key...especially since their launch won't be competing with other system's new console launches, you might as well take the time to make sure this console has a great lineup ready from day 1

But then what would be the big game this years holiday season?

As someone with experience in these matters: the March launch is essential because it allows the factories to better predict demand and order the components they will need for the console's first holiday season. Nintendo probably lost a lot of potential business over the years with its Q4 console launches since true demand is hard to predict. March launches allow plenty of time for tooling machines for a big production line for the fourth quarter. It's a very smart choice.

My guess has been March 2025 even since before all the 'insiders' were telling us it was a lock for 2024.

This is gonna be a slow year for Switch, unless you wanna pay full price for over 10 year old ports
