Today Nintendo of Japan have announced that they have acquired Shiver Entertainment from Embracer. In today’s modern games industry acquisitions are abundant by all of the major publishers save for Nintendo so whenever they do actually lay down the cash to snap up a studio it always turns heads.

While Shiver Entertainment did develop Scribblenauts Showdown in the past the team’s main focus has been on porting third party titles to the Switch such as Hogwarts Legacy, Mortal Kombat 11, and Mortal Kombat 1. According to Nintendo’s notice of acquisition Shiver’s directive will remain very much the same under their banner with the goal being to “secure high-level resources for porting and developing software titles.” You can read their full statement down below.

Purpose of Acquisition

Shiver is a video game development company that develops software for multiple platforms including Nintendo Switch. Since its establishment in 2012, Shiver has partnered with publishers and developers through commissions for large scale title developments, and recently, has worked on porting and developing software titles such as Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat 1.

Nintendo will acquire 100% of the outstanding shares of Shiver and make it a wholly owned subsidiary. By welcoming Shiver’s experienced and accomplished development team, Nintendo aims to secure high-level resources for porting and developing software titles. Going forward, even after it becomes a part of the Nintendo group, Shiver’s focuswill remain the same, continuing commissions that port and develop software for multiple platforms including Nintendo Switch. The Acquisition will be completed pending satisfaction of all relevant customary closing conditions.

UPDATE: Shiver has since updated their website with a new banner at the bottom that names the company as a “wholly owned subsidiary of Nintendo.” You can find the website here.

Nope. Definitely a head scratcher.

Diversifying their portfolio to include Shiver is definitely an enigma. Huh.

Weird move, could not see this coming. But it will help with ports from third parties, which is nice

Nintendo doesn't do acquisitions very often do they? This is very rare and a kind of odd one as well. I'm sure they have their reasons.

I just hope Nintendo acquires me timbers next.

I hope by multiple platforms they mean just Nintendo platforms.

I don't see them doing ports of Sony and MS games.

Being responsible for the Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat 1 ports is NOT something to be proud of.

Blame WB for those. Shiver did improve MK 1's quality on Switch, but it was never going to reach the specs of non-Switch platforms. Heck even Steam Deck runs MK 1 better than Switch. Shiver probably was bound by the mobile Mortal Kombat X engine that was brought onto Switch through the Unreal Engine and then had to upgrade the engine for UE 4 which caused many issues.
