With rumblings of a Switch successor becoming louder every day, Nintendo’s current console does seem to be winding down in some respects. Many of their new releases have been remakes or ports of older titles, and that includes the recently released Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. You might be wondering: Just how long has this remake been in the works? Well, wonder no more…

According to the German Rating Organization known as USK, The Thousand Year Door was actually rated for release in June 2023, over a year ago. As a matter of fact, this isn’t the first time Nintendo has had a game rated this far in advance. Metroid Prime Remastered was rated a full eighteen months before it finally got released on Switch.

Might Nintendo have planned to release Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door earlier at some point? Are they sitting on other completed games that they’re simply waiting for the right time to publish? We’ll never really be able to understand their inner workings, but it’s fun to speculate!
