What is this mystery Mario Kart product? (UPDATE)

UPDATE - Best Buy listing has been added.

A tipster who wishes to remain anonymous has sent us pictures of this Mario Kart product. We have no idea what it is, and neither does the tipster. They happen to work at a big retailer, and this product showed up the other day.

There's no mention of this product on the retailer's website, or even in internal listings. When scanned into the computer system, it comes up as a preorder bonus, but with a $60 price tag. This might make you think it's a special case for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The thing is, when you scan in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and this product, the two don't cancel each other out. In other words, both products combined ring up for $120 instead of $60.

Anyone out there have another guess as to what this is? It's kind of late for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to get a preorder bonus! Is this some sort of special holiday offering? If we get any other details, we'll be sure to update this post.

It's hard to guess without knowing the size. Hard to tell by that image. Looks shiny and kewl.

I'd LOVE for there to be new courses for the game... but I can't see that being sold in a $60 physical package. I can't wait to find out more, though. Mario Kart 8 gets played EVERY TIME somebody visits my house.

possibly a "Deluxe" packaged download card for the game?

It looks like an award for winning a Mario Kart competition.

Its not that farfetched to think that MK9 could happen next year. MK8 released in 2014 and the last DLC was released over 2 years ago already. The battle mode in Deluxe shouldn't have taken that much dev time.

Kinda offtopic, but similarly at this point we probably won't get a Smash 4 port but instead get Smash 5.

While all of that is true, I think releasing 9 so soon after 8 Deluxe would make some people unhappy... me, for instance, who bought 8 on the Wii, bought the DLC, then bought Deluxe on the Switch so it could be portable. If 9 were come out soon I'd have regrets on buying 8 Deluxe.

Plus, the first thing we see about a new Mario Kart game would not be a retail package.

I'm thinking similarly to you on Smash... The gap is getting large enough that I'd prefer to just wait another year or so and get a sequel.

Its a steelcase that is for sure. Probably just a way to sell more Mario Kart 8s during the holidays. Will probably bundle during its promotion period.

I think you’re right, they’re gonna want entice all those new switch owners

If I were to guess, I think they may be planning a Player's Choice/Nintendo Selects kind of re-release for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe including all its DLC. It's nice to see that they're getting used to these steelbooks, with Xenoblade 2, Skyward Sword, and Metroid Prime Trilogy, for collector's edition sets. I'm not too crazy about them, dings and dents become permanent. I would, however, prefer them to try something different like say a slipcover or slipcase if more than one cases, but the design here looks nice and red, like the 25th anniversary Super Mario All-stars release.. which now reminds me that it has been 25 years since the release of Super Mario Kart!

Only thing is, MK8 Deluxe already had all the DLC. Unless you mean patches (like the one that fixed the emotionless Mii). Otherwise don't recall anything major.

I'll tell you what it is... It's probably one of those trophies that could be won through the former incarnation of the Club Nintendo.

You know, when Club Nintendo's awards could be ACTUALLY called so..
