Nintendo releases a statement concerning stories of abuse within the Smash Bros. community

In recent days, a wave of information has come out about the Smash Bros. community. Unfortunately, it appears that multiple people within that community have been engaging in multiple forms of abuse, and some prominent players have been named in the allegations. While Nintendo has nothing to do with the horrible things going on in the community, they have still provided a comment on the matter. You can read a statement the company provided to IGN below.

"At Nintendo, we are deeply disturbed by the allegations raised against certain members of the competitive gaming community. They are absolutely impermissible. We want to make it clear that we condemn all acts of violence, harassment, and exploitation against anyone and that we stand with the victims."

And people have long wondered why Nintendo doesn't want to get too involved with a bunch of gamers in such a "tight-knit community."

This isn't the first time there have been predators in the Competitive scene for Smash and I doubt it'll be the last. Disgusting.

No truer words have ever been spoken. After this Nintendo will most probably abandon support for this type of events.

You absolutely nailed it. I at least understood Nintendo's reluctance to support the Melee community for strictly business reasons, but I was disappointed they wouldn't get involved with the current-gen Smash competitive scene. Now I "get it".

I hope this reckoning absolutely torches the toxic cesspool of that community, so it can rebuild on its own.

I don't think I can ever attend another Smash event.

The bigger and bigger esports gets, the more this will happen because you start to get players and organizers that end up with their ego large enough to think they are allowed this behavior.

Disgusting that even today we still have to deal with this. Until people stop letting it happen and enforce harsh policies for these people, it won't stop

It’s no different than regular sports. A lot (but not all) of the people who pursue that lifestyle are in it because of ego and the pursuit of glory. Although there’s value in entertainment, what they do has no value in and of itself. It’s nothing but a life of self gratification. Not at all surprising when it leads to that kind of bad behavior.

Yeah, you see similar stories of harassment and abuse in athletic sports too. There is less of it though, as they've gone through scandals like these in the past and they now have very harsh penalties for this behavior as a result.

There should be those same harsh penalties, as well as a system for reporting and a way to contact the authorities in a way that keeps the victims safe. Competitive pinball has this system, and the result is harassment and abuse being completely unacceptable by the larger community rather than dismissed or encouraged.

As someone who occasionally frequents Smaah Bros forums, its absolutely disgusting seeing people try to minimize some of the issues or shift blame away from the adult players preying on children for whatever the reason they come up with. Not only that, there is a huge issue of 10+ people living together in most of these cases, and i don't believe others didn't know of this before, and ignoring or covering up sexual assault because someone is your friend is equally as deplorable. I'm truly embarrassed ever being even a tenuous member of these communities.
