“Toadal Disaster” short created by Disney animator using only a 3DS

In addition to a great library of games, the Nintendo 3DS had some very cool apps intended for creative pursuits like art and music. Now, just days before the official closure of the 3DS eShop, animator Wayne Unten has shared an animated short he created using only those apps.
Unten works at Walt Disney Animation Studios and says he spent various moments of free time over the past two years working on this short, titled “Toadal Disaster”. It’s a cute little short featuring a witch practicing some spells with her pet toad. The apps used to create it include Butterfly: Inchworm Animation II, Colors! 3D, Flipnote, and Korg M01D.

A co-op platformer called Alice Sisters has just launched a new Kickstarter campaign to fund a release on Game Boy Advance. This retro throwback game was previously released on SEGA Genesis and the Dreamcast, and now developer OrionSoft is looking to expand its reach.
The game was designed with 2-player co-op in mind, and you’ll be able to enjoy that mode using two Game Boy Advance systems connected via Link Cable. Best of all, you’ll only need one cartridge in order to share the game, so you can bring a friend along easily.
At the time of this post, the campaign has received around $5,500 of its $21,433 goal, with 25 days left to go. You can back the project for $16 to receive a GBA ROM of the game, $43 for just the physical cartridge, or $59 for the cartridge with a box and manual. There are also options for other console versions such as the PlayStation 1.

Kingdom Hearts concert artwork features music by Organization XIII
A real melody of memory
Some new Kingdom Hearts artwork has cropped up online following the special Kingdom Hearts Second Breath concert which was held in Tokyo this past weekend. The artwork appeared in pamphlets handed out to the audience, and was created by Shiro Amano who also worked on Kingdom Hearts’ manga adaptations. It features characters from the in-game group Organization XIII performing a concert of their own. Check it out in full below.
As an added treat, here’s a shot of another piece of artwork by artist Tetsuya Nomura featuring Sora conducting. None other than Masahiro Sakurai himself took this photo! After attending the concert, he remarked that “Conductor Kaoru Wada’s movements are youthful and amazing”. Sounds like a great event!
Celebrate Mega Man Battle Network's 22nd anniversary with new art and anime streams

Today marks the 22nd anniversary of Mega Man Battle Network’s original release on the Game Boy Advance on March 21, 2001. In celebration of this series milestone, Capcom is sharing a few goodies for fans.
First, Capcom artist Keisuke Mizuno posted some new artwork inspired by a classic Mega Man Battle Network advertisement, featuring Lan and Mega Man. Check it out via the tweet below.
Next, Capcom is hosting a stream of Mega Man NT Warrior on their Twitch channel. This anime was based on the Battle Network games, and they’ll be streaming episodes from it for free from today through March 24, 2023 at 10pm Eastern Time.

Hogwarts Legacy mod reveals evidence of cut companion system
Legacy of loneliness
Hogwarts Legacy currently has no companion system, meaning you’ll have to tackle all of its missions by yourself without any friends by your side. However, players have managed to discover a number of dialogue clips which seem to indicate that this was a planned feature, but was cut before the game’s release.
A mod for the PC version of the game enables a rudimentary companion option, allowing you to take your classmates with you on various missions. What’s revealing about these missions is that several of the characters have voice lines which only make sense in the context of them joining you, something they aren’t able to do in the official version of the game.
See the screenshot below for an example from Reddit user _SeventyEight, featuring the line “Following floating candles into the Forbidden Forest? Well, then. After you.”
Other players have reported hearing similar lines from various characters when approaching specific areas of the game. As of now, developer Avalanche Studios hasn’t commented on whether or not a companion option was meant to be in the game, or if it could be coming in a future update. However, with a AAA game of this size, it’s not surprising that some things had to be cut.
Hogwarts Legacy will be available on the Switch on July 25, 2023.

Xenoblade 3 won Best RPG!
The Famitsu/Dengeki Game Award 2022 winners were announced today, and there’s a good number of Nintendo games that took home wins. Some of the biggest ones included Xenoblade 3 winning Best RPG, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet for Best Scenario, and Splatoon 3 for Best Action Game. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom also won the award for Most Anticipated Game in the upcoming year.

The Persona series’ director and producer Kazuhisa Wada recently sat down for an interview with Sega Asia. Wada discussed the Persona series’ evolution, as well as its recent transition to consoles like the Nintendo Switch with Persona 5 Royal and other titles. Here’s a portion from the interview in which he mentions the challenges involved with getting the game running on less advanced hardware:
Q: With how different the hardware is for each platform, I imagine that porting P5R to the Nintendo Switch was quite a difficult process.
Wada: Yes, SEGA really saved us there. [laughs] Thanks to their help on the technical side and in other ways, we were able to fully optimize P5R for all platforms. [As previously reported, Sega assumed the lead on the development of Persona 5 Royal‘s ports.]
Q: What else was difficult about preparing for a multi-platform release?
Wada: Unlike consoles, Steam is used on an endless variety of hardware and specs, so taking care of the framerate was our first task. Also, a surprisingly large portion of users prefer to play RPGs with a mouse and implementing mouse and keyboard support with the UI was quite difficult.
Another challenging aspect was managing version control for multiple platforms all at the same time.
Luckily, SEGA was there to provide their expertise in the adaptation! Wada also gave his thoughts on the future of the Persona franchise, and the team’s intentions to get even more fans on board for upcoming games:
Q: I’m sure there are a lot of things that you can’t divulge yet, but how will the Persona series continue to grow in the future?
Wada: We are working on various ways to bring the Persona series to a wider audience. I can’t say any specifics at this time, but please look forward to it.
Q: Are there any game genres you want to experiment with while using the world and characters of Persona?
Wada: We’ve already done the genres that I wanted to, like fighting games and rhythm games. We also tried out the action genre with Persona 5 Strikers. The action genre is quite popular worldwide, we’d like to try making another game in that genre later on.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is poised to make at least $85-$90 million opening weekend
That's a lot of coins!
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is just a few weeks away, and it’s now appearing on box office tracking, giving us a good idea of how successful it’s likely to be. According to reports, it should be able to gross at least $85-$90 million over the course of its 5-day opening weekend (Wednesday, April 5th to Sunday, April 9th).
To put that number in perspective, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 earned around $71 million during its opening weekend. At the time, it was the biggest opening for any movie based on a video game. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is set to overtake that record, and that’s with an estimate on the conservative side, as it could easily surpass these predictions.
With the recent excitement of Mario Day and the opening of Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios, everything seems to be lining up for The Super Mario Bros. Movie to be a box office smash! Stay tuned as we get closer to the movie’s release date on April 5, 2023.
My Nintendo Europe offering Game Boy Poster Set
Representing the classics
In honor of the recent launch of Game Boy games on Nintendo Switch Online, a new set of posters is now available from Europe’s My Nintendo store (pictured above). The set includes three posters inspired by the following games: Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, and Metroid II: Return of Samus.
The set is available for 600 Platinum Coins, and there is a limit of one per customer. Each poster is sized at 70 x 50cm, and the material is listed as glossy coated artpaper.
