At the start of this month, we learned that Retro Goal was coming to Switch in the next couple of weeks. This game was created by New Star Games, which previously worked on Retro Bowl. As you might guess, Retro Goal continues the efforts of Retro Bowl by offering a straightforward, old-school approach to Soccer.

Those retro aspirations don’t stop at arcade gameplay and chunky visuals, though. In an interview with Nintendo Life, developer Simon Read said the attention to retro detail even applies to the game’s control scheme.

I definitely prefer to play with Joy-Cons now and right from the off it was clear that physical controls improved the game — it was just a matter of tweaking and iterating the feel. We also wanted to ensure that the game could be played on the NES controllers for Switch, so figuring out the best control scheme was a challenge, but those are the sorts of puzzles I enjoy about game design. You can still use the touchscreen controls too.
