Back in September, Splatoon 3 managed to set a new record for fast-selling game ever in Japan, moving over 3.45 million units in Japan alone. At the time, we wondered if Splatoon 3 would hold onto that record for decades to come, or if Pokemon would steal it just a few months later. Today we have our answer.

While Splatoon 3’s 3.45 million in 3 days was spectacular, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet managed to beat it handily. Over in Japan, Pokemon Scarlet/Violet launched to 4.05 million units sold in 3 days, besting Splatoon 3 by roughly 600k. That’s more than enough to take the crown.

Splatoon 3 managed to hold onto its record for a couple of months, but now it’ll have to settle for snagging the second-best launch in Japan. Now we get to see what game can take the victory from Pokémon Scarlet/Violet, and quite honestly, I don’t think there’s anything in sight!

Very happy for Game Freak. They crafted their most ambitious and broadly appealing game. I wish it ran more smoothly, but the gaming population at large has spoken loud and clear: Keep pushing the cooperative elements and non-linear approach further, and add more Pokémon with pompadours
