The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is going to be priced at $70, making it the first Switch game to come in at that total. Turns out that’s not the only record-breaking aspect Link and the gang will achieve in their next adventure!

The Switch eShop has confirmed that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom clocks in at 18.2 GB. That pales in comparison to other titles on the Switch eShop, but it’s actually the biggest first-party game Nintendo has ever released!

The previous mainline Zelda game, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, came in at 14.4 GB. Turns out Nintendo needed another 4+ GB to cram in everything that Tears of the Kingdom has to offer!

For those wondering, Smash Bros. Ultimate was the previous file size record-holder as far as first party games go. That title requires 17.3 GB if you’re going the digital route.

Pretty sure Smash Ultimate was larger actually.

Bigger than Smash Ultimate (~16GB). Nice. 2023 is looking good.

As someone pointed out in the other comment thread, this could very well be the reason for the $70 price tag. After years of impressively low file sizes Nintendo's finally gone beyond a 16GB Switch cart.

Smash Ultimate store page says 19GB needed in Europe.

@kuribo

The total GB count rose over time due to all the DLC content. Even if you don't buy the DLC you still have to download the updates containing them.

Good point. Isn’t it a case that the game updates even if you haven’t purchased the content so you can play against those who have?

"...the biggest first-party game Nintendo has ever released!"

I know IGN must've forgot since it was on the Wii U but Xenoblade Chronicles X would be the biggest first-party release, clocking in at 22 GB. Add 10 more to that to your portable hard drive if you want faster load times.

@kuribo

Yeah, that's true for multiplayer games but on Switch you even have to download DLC updates for singleplayer games.
For example: You had to download the entire Torna DLC for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 no matter if you actually bought it or not. That's one thing I don't like about the Switch.
