Have a Nice Death was influenced by The Office, Parks & Rec says dev team

Have a Nice Death is a hand-drawn 2D Action Rogue-Lite where you play as Death, Founder and CEO of Death Incorporated—a sprawling corporate empire that processes souls for the afterlife—who currently finds himself teetering on the edge of burnout. The game is set to arrive on March 22nd, 2023, and ahead of that release you can check out 15 minutes of new gameplay above.
Along with that, the gang at Nintendo Life talked to Mérédith Alfroy, Narrative Designer on the game for some insight into how things came together. Alfroy shared a number of other pieces of entertainment that inspired Have a Nice Death, including some comedies almost everyone is familiar with.
The workplace is the central theme throughout the game narrative, and we paid particular attention to how work is currently viewed in our society and how this could be transposed into a cartoon Gothic universe. As this sort of topic can be quite gloomy, we decided at the start of production to take a more humourful, often satirical approach. We were especially keen to keep the tone of the game lighthearted and play on stereotypes present in the workplace in general. Therefore, our initial inspiration came from the very images brought to mind when we talk about company life.
On a personal level, I have previous experience working in a civil service role, and some clichés are pretty much on the nose. This provided some great inspiration for the game. In terms of writing, we’re influenced by the absurdist humour of some French animated series and TV shows (Kassos, COGIP, Les Nuls, Les Inconnus, Camera Café), as well as The Office (US) and Parks and Recreation.
