Fan service in anime, and to a lesser extent, games, has been a hot topic for years now. Fan service, for those who don’t know, is described as “material in a work of fiction or in a fictional series that is intentionally added to please the audience, often sexual in nature.” The idea of fan service in and of itself isn’t inherently wrong, but it can certainly take a game that might be appropriate for any audience and push it into the age-gated range. It can also make a sizable chunk of an audience somewhat uncomfortable.

The Atelier Ryza franchise has certainly had its fair share of fan service over the years. You can even see it on display in the recently-announced anime, but each subsequent installment seems to lessen the overall amount of lewd content. According to the dev team, this is very much by design.

Nintendo Life spoke to producer Junzo Hosoi to see if fans were imagining the series’ more tame approach, but Hosoi confirmed it as a conscious decision.

Yes, it is (a conscious decision to move away from fan service). We want as many players as possible to pick up and play our games. For this reason, we are constantly listening to the opinions of various players and looking for and coming up with content that they will enjoy again. We would be happy if many people think of Gust games when they think of JRPGs.

[Junzo Hosoi, producer]

On a personal note, I actually just wrote a Patreon post about fan service and how it was taking me out an anime I am watching. If you subscribe for $1, you can give it a read, along with a new post every single day of the week!

Yeah I read that interview. The question was very confusing and Junzo gave the most safe non answer you could give. The Gonintento title is misleading.

idk how hot this take rates on the Scoville scale, but fan service literally saved the Atelier franchise. Look at the sales/general reception/popularity of the franchise pre-Ryza's thighs and post Ryza's thighs.

Also Rawmeatcowboy, please read that interview again yourself.

The question is phrased very poorly.
"Having reviewed all of the Switch entries in the series over the past few years, we’ve noticed a shift from what you might call a more ‘fan-servicey’ style towards RPGs that feel like they are trying to appeal to a much wider audience. Has it been a conscious decision to redirect the style of the franchise in this way?"

I had to do a double read on that cause of how confusing the question was stated. It almost sounded like the interviewer was remarking on how the use of fan service has been used to appeal to a much wider audience. Also Junzo never actually says they're making a conscious decision to move away from fan service, that's what the interviewer thinks he said, (they put those words in brackets like this as he was answering).

Please re-title this blog post, it is misleading and will cause unnecessary turmoil.

What red blooded citizen of the world gets turned away from sexy images? The series is known because of sexy anime women and you don't wait until this late in the game to be like, "I want my game to be taken seriously!"
