People have been talking about the 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros. movie ever since it first released. Fans and critics alike were very disappointed with the film, and it took decades for the movie to obtain its cult status. Still, those who now appreciate the movie still recognize that it’s not a very good one.

Seth Rogen, who portrays Donkey Kong in the new Super Mario Bros. movie, was one of the people disappointed by that original Mario movie. In an interview with Variety, he recalls not just seeing it as a kid, but how upset it left him.

“When I was 11, I saw the original ‘Mario Bros.’ movie and I was so excited. But it’s one of the worst films ever made. I was so disappointed. I think it made me realize that movies, like, could be bad. That never occurred to me until that moment. It really bummed me out. It’s nice to vindicate that moment. It’s nice to know that 11-year-olds out there that they won’t be disappointed in the same way that I was.”

It certainly seems like the new movie is leagues beyond the 1993 offering, at least for most theater-goers. Hopefully that’s the case for you when you check the movie out!

I’m a fan of cheesy movies, so the first Mario movie manages to make me laugh.. but probably not in the way its creators intended.😅
