Most of you are probably spending your days playing the latest DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and there’s nothing wrong with that! Millions upon millions of people are playing Mario Kart’s latest content, while a dedicated few are still plugging away at classic entries. Fewer still have focused their attention solely on Mario Kart 64, and their dedication and hard work has resulted in a seemingly-impossible trick being pulled off for the first time.

This particular time-saving trick is in Bowser’s Castle, and it’s been thought to be impossible in an actual speedrun for a very long time now. The skip involves driving through a very specific wall, thanks to an incredibly small gap in the geometry. Players would have to be at the precise speed and angle to slip through this glitchy spot, and somehow speedrunner Forest64 has achieved the impossible.

While Mario Kart 64 has been around since 1996, the existence of this shortcut was first revealed in 2021 by Forest64, and they’ve been trying to recreate it ever since. Finally, after roughly 200 hours of grinding, Forest64 managed to pull off the skip once again on March 11th, 2023. You can see the complete history of how this came about in the video above.
