With E3 dead and every company doing their own thing this year, many have been wondering if Nintendo is going to have some sort of Direct to showcase what’s next for the company. While Nintendo has kept quiet, the rumor mill is churning at full speed.

As usual, Jeff Grubb of Giant Bomb has shared some speculative thoughts on what could be going down in the not-too-distant future. Just to be clear, nothing is set in stone at this time, but it seems some insiders are starting to hear a thing or two.

“Early rumblings, I say that’s something is gonna be in July next month, whether that is a proper Direct or like a Partner Direct or like a 3rd party showcase Direct however they want to frame it, Direct Mini…. I have no idea. But it seems like don’t expect anything of that sort until next month, if that even happens at all. Like I said, rumblings, it seems pretty likely that something can happen next month with Nintendo, although July Direct would be weird.”

[Jeff Grubb, Giant Bomb]

If this rumor does turn out to be true, it would certainly make sense for a July presentation to be a spin-off Direct, rather than a full-fat feature. I’d put my money on a Partner Showcase like Nintendo ran with last year, with a more traditional Direct to come a couple of months later.

Once again, please note that this is all speculative discussion and nowhere near fact. We’ll keep monitoring the situation and see what pops up.

If we do get a partner showcase / indie direct, I hope to see Risk of Rain Returns present, which is both confirmed for switch and still doesnt have a release date. Could be a good "avaliable after this presentation" game.

Oh good, another round of rumors that will lead up to Nintendo not showing Metroid Prime 4 again. Not that it exists.

A Pikmin 4 Treehouse is what I would expect to be coming, but maybe that is too obvious?

Wonder if Nintendo has more than just ports, which can be good ports of course, or some new, smaller games to to see the Switch off, or if they are just giving the Switch 2 their all.

"Not that it exists."

So this attitude is still a trend, eh. Same was said with Bayonetta 3 and I have not only played, but love it.
Then again, MP4 has gone through some pretty nasty development Hell... But so did FF7Remake, so I'll wait for something official.

They'll of course want to plant seeds for the holiday season at SOME POINT. After Pikmin 4 comes out late July, what is left that we know about? Just Metroid Prime 4, right?

@hawk

Or.. we might see a glimpse of a new Mario game?

It has been forever since Super Mario Odyssey came out. It'll be like 6 years this holiday season. I can't imagine it'll take 7 years until Nintendo releases a new original Mario title.

@lionk

Agreed. But, like Zelda, Nintendo typically releases one big Mario game per console. As far as I can tell.

I would LOVE to see a new Mario game. And I think it would be a great pick for a big holiday release, especially with all the momentum the Mario brand has right now.

If this Christmas all we're seeing is little stuff like Ring Fit 2 and a sidescrolling Kirby game, it'll feel like Nintendo's just coasting to the Switch's successor.

@hawk

Unless they "do a Wii" (now that was an oddity to write for me) and just give us some leftovers until the successor is announced and out. Which would be good for the successor, but what about their biggest fanbase to date?

@lionk

There has been way too may rumours about a new Mario game, but they would need that to push the Switch 2.
