Nintendo has shared some updated stats on The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and not surprisingly, the film continues to be an absolute juggernaut.

According to Nintendo’s Q1 results for Fiscal Year 2024, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been viewed by 168.10 million people worldwide as of July 30th, 2023. This number helped the film reach $1.349 billion dollars in box office returns. Not surprisingly, this is the highest ever for an original film based on a video game.

Nintendo also states that this revenue figure is the second-highest for an animated film, but every piece of data we can see shows Frozen II as reaching $1.45 billion, so we’re not sure where Nintendo is getting that data from.

Nintendo also noted that The Super Mario Bros. Movie has heightened consumer interest in Super Mario, leading to positive effects in a wide range of fields. Nintendo has seen growing sales of Mario related titles, along with sales of smart device apps and merchandise.

Finally, Nintendo has said that based on the various effects they’ve confirmed through the release of this movie, they will continue efforts towards creating more visual content-related initiatives.

Seems depending on what list you read, the Lion King remake is either on it at #1 or not on the list.
Nintendo must be considering the Lion King to not be animation. For example this list https://www.the-numbers.com/box-office-records/worldwide/all-movies/cumulative/all-time-animated

In fairness, Disney marketed that Lion King as “live action” so I say let Elsa have the crown at #1.

That's a pretty good point. I don't consider 2019's Lion King to be animation either.
