A new trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 came out today, and it features Dave Bautista front-and-center. It doesn’t appear that Bautista is in the game itself, but he’s acting as the pitchman in this commercial that’s sure to stir up some memories and emotions from longtime Mortal Kombat fans.

Old gamers like myself very much remember ‘Mortal Monday,’ as it was a major event at the time. This was the day that Mortal Kombat was moving from arcades to home consoles and portables. To promote the release, the ‘Mortal Monday’ commercial was released, and it had an absolute stranglehold on kids at the time. You can see that original spot below.

NetherRealm Studios has channeled that classic commercial’s spirit to promote the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1. With the series going through a complete reboot for this installment, it makes for the perfect time to revisit the absolutely iconic commercial. The new spot manages to ride the line between nostalgia and tribute while also adding in a sprinkle of humor. In my opinion, it really does the trick!
