Mario Strikers Charged, the follow-up to Super Mario Strikers, came out back in 2007. That means its been 15 long years since we’ve seen the Strikers series, but it’s finally coming back in Mario Strikers: Battle League, the next installment in the popular arcade-style soccer series.

This sequel couldn’t have come about without the minds at Next Level Games, who were originally tasked with creating Super Mario Strikers on the GameCube. In the video above, Mike Inglehart, a former dev from Next Level Games, opens up on how the original game came to be, and how it presented all kinds of challenges.

Of course, Next Level has worked on other big-name Nintendo properties as well, including the Punch-Out!! series. In particular, Next Level was tasked with bringing Punch-Out!! back for the Wii audience, and they killed it with Punch-Out!! Wii. Inglehart also had plenty to say on what it was like handling that franchise’s return, and updating it for more modern audiences.

You can hear all of this and much more in the video above, which might be the most extensive interview with anyone from Next Level to date. If you’re a fan of the games above or Next Level in general, this is definitely worth a watch!

Thanks for posting this. I just finished watching the entire interview. This guy really seems like he was a big part of what made Strikers and Punch-Out great on the Wii. It’s a bummer that this guy is no longer working for Next Level Games, and therefore was not involved in the new Strikers title. Here’s hoping the current NLG creative team can deliver a sequel worth owning.
