The original Detective Pikachu launched for the 3DS all the way back in 2018. That was quickly followed by an announcement of Detective Pikachu Returns back in 2019. Many expected the game to launch shortly thereafter, but 4+ long years have passed. Thankfully, the wait is about to end, as Detective Pikachu Returns launches on Oct. 6th, 2023.

Wondering why it took the team so long to release Detective Pikachu Returns after announcing it? IGN had the chance to talk to Creatures’ Senior Creative Director Yasunori Yanagisawa about the situation, and the answer is multi-faceted.

One of the main reasons behind this is mostly the change in hardware, and that with the more specs available hardware-wise there are just a lot more things that were possible to do. It was hard to narrow down and figure out exactly what sort of things the developers wanted to do with this game.
