Telltale's The Walking Dead was originally a Left 4 Dead spin-off

Telltale’s The Walking Dead series has turned 10 years old, believe it or not. The series was both critically and commercially successful, fostering a fanbase that still sings the franchise’s praises all these years later. Many consider The Walking Dead to be Telltale’s magnum opus game-wise, also acting as a major shot in the arm for the episodic adventure genre.

10 years after the release of the first entry in Telltale’s The Walking Dead series, Skybound Games has honored the franchise’s legacy with a mini-doc that details the series’ importance while also revealing some behind-the-scenes tidbits. You can check out the entire doc above.

Of particular interest is the fact that Telltale’s The Walking Dead actually started out as a spin-off to Valve’s Left 4 Dead franchise. Before The Walking Dead became tied to the series, the original plan was to offer up a narrative side-story to what Valve had done. Unfortunately, we don’t know why that path ahead was cut short, but we obviously know where Telltale took the franchise next!
