AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES is a unique puzzle/mystery game that came to Switch back in 2019. The game was well-reviewed, and apparently moved a good amount of units, too. This helped pave the way for AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES - nirvanA Initiative, a sequel heading to Switch on June 24th, 2022.

While plenty of people liked the original game, it wasn’t without its faults. Fans were more than happy to share their issues, complaints, and suggestions via social media, and the team behind AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES - nirvanA Initiative was listening.

In an interview with Nintendo Life, AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES - nirvanA Initiative Director Akira Okada said scoured the internet to find opinions on what should be changed, tweaked, or removed for a sequel. That feedback was indeed implemented for the upcoming follow-up, and resulted in the following changes.

  • minor changes to how investigations are handled
  • motion capture implemented for characters
  • “Keys” system to offer players more hints and clues on what to do
  • new difficulty levels offered for players who found the last game too challenging
  • “unlimited Psync” that lets you play a Somnium without a time limit
  • added a navigation function
  • added a “Lock Info” screen that records hints
  • other minor functional modifications

The characters moved rather awkwardly sometimes so motion capture is very welcome.
Unlimited Psyn: YES. JUST YES. Time limits suck! I can finally exlpore every nook and cranny and watch some funny scenes without the risk of having to restart the sequence.
