Reggie Fils-Aimé may not be employed by Nintendo anymore, but he’ll forever be a part of the company’s history and fandom. It’ll always be interesting to hear what the big guy has to say, and he imparted with more insight and wisdom at a keynote session for GamesBeat Summit 2022.

Reggie was a big part of Nintendo for their major successes, considerable failures, and everything in-between. During the keynote panel, Reggie stated that ,“the way we learn is by analyzing our failures and applying those lessons moving forward.” In particular, Reggie pointed to the Wii U and the 3DS launch price as missteps for Nintendo. The thing is, Nintendo did learn from both. The Wii U paved the way for Switch, and the 3DS price cut led to great success for that portable.

Reggie discussed a lot of other topics during his keynote panel, and you can find bullet points for the most notable tidbits below.

  • Reggie views Microsoft’s Game Pass as “a really innovative idea,” but they need to improve messaging
  • Reggie says Sony needs to fix their supply issues with the Playstation
  • Reggie says the metaverse is “digital, immersive, a place that has persistence in execution. There’s a common currency. There’s a wide range of different developers creating content for this.”
  • Reggie views Meta the company as more of a follower and less of an innovator
  • Reggie says he’s bullish on NFTs and blockchain
  • Reggie says he hasn’t played Animal Crossing: New Horizons in awhile
  • Reggie says he’d like a way to monetize his island in the game, but it needs to be done thoughtfully
  • Reggie says the purchase of Bungie will help Sony in the live services sector
  • Reggie believes that Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard from a brilliant financial play
  • Reggie believes there will be an exodus of developers with all these acquisitions
  • Reggie finds the Steam Deck interesting, although he believes that it is overpriced for what it is
  • Reggie expects E3 to evolve, and he believes that Geoff Keighley will pick up the slack this year
  • Reggie continues to believe it’s important to get games into fans’ hands before they launch

I'm surprised Reggie so vehemently believes in early access games. Sure, Nintendo offers occasional demos and testfires for Splatoon and ARMS, but the demos are few and far between, and the global testfire periods aren't for more than a collective few hours at a time.

Not that I'm excited either about buggy early access games being made available on consoles, but it's a curious take from him

So he's into NFTs and he wants to monetize his Animal Crossing island. Huh. Not two of the best things to learn about a beloved figure in the gaming space.

I miss the Reggie years. It would be great to have people like him and Iwata during the latter years of the Switch. I believe him when he says he would like to monetize "thoughtfully". I bet better ways to sell digital good could be found.
