The Switch is 6+ years old at this point, and it continues to be a major player in the gaming market. While most systems see their sales peter off by this point, the Switch seems to be defying all logic by only getting stronger. That is especially the case over in Japan, where a new report shows the platform’s incredibly success for 2023.

We’re currently halfway through Nintendo’s 2023/2024 fiscal year, and the Switch has sold 2.28 million units in Japan alone. (h/t VGC) That’s an impressive number this late in the Switch’s lifespan, but the real shocker is the fact that this year’s numbers are outpacing last year. At this point in Nintendo’s last fiscal year, the Switch had sold 2.15 million units in Japan. If Nintendo keeps up this pace, the Switch’s 6th fiscal year in Japan could end up better than its 5th!

There’s no doubt that the Switch’s software lineup this fiscal year has led to the recent boon in sales, as titles like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom brought players in by the millions, and many of them scooped up a Switch at the same time. With Super Mario Bros. Wonder just days away and the Mario Red OLED Switch already showing a major impact on the sales charts, there’s no doubt Nintendo’s momentum will continue as we roll into 2024.
