Just a few days back, Super Mario Bros. Wonder producer Takashi Tezuka said it was an “interesting coincidence” that both Mario and Sonic were starring in new 2D platformers that were releasing in the same week. Tezuka also mentioned that he was looking forward to people enjoying both adventures. Just a few days after that interview, we now know how SEGA feels about the same situation.

In an interview with Game Informer, Sonic Team creative officer Takashi Iizuka was asked about his feelings on Mario and Sonic getting new 2D games within days of each other. You can see his comments on the matter below.

“It has been a long time since Mario and Sonic released a completely new 2D platform game, but I feel something fateful about the fact that they are coming out in the same week,” he says. “People say that Mario and Sonic are similar, but each has different fun elements. I hope you will play both games this year and experience the difference in enjoyment.”

I expect the harsh reality to set in for Sonic Superstars to hit when Mario Wonder's reviews come online.
