Detective Pikachu Returns just launched on Switch a couple of weeks ago, finally bringing an end to the 7+ year wait between the 3DS original and this sequel. Fans can now see how the great detective’s adventure not only continues, but concludes, in this follow-up. That said, there could be room for a spin-off down the road.

Famitsu magazine had the chance to speak with Creatures Inc. managing director Hiroyuki Jinnai about the future of the Detective Pikachu franchise, and it seems like there might be some wiggle room for something more. (h/t VGC)

But he said (via Google translate) that the team isn’t ruling out the possibility of a spin-off. “This concludes the story of Jinnai Tim, Pikachu, and Harry. However, all the staff also love the talking old man Pikachu, so maybe there will be a different development from the main story?”

A similar sentiment was shared by Pokémon Company president Tsunekazu Ishihara, who says a spin-off is in the hands of fans right now.

“I can’t make any promises at this point, but if Detective Pikachu Returns is well received and there is a great demand for it, there is room for a spin-off.”
