Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate originally launched for the Nintendo DS all the way back in 2010. The game ended up getting a port to the PS Vita 5 years later, and then eventually the Switch in 2020. It turns out that Switch release ended up being quite important for the series’ future.

In an interview with Famitsu, Spike Chunsoft mentioned that Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate’s success on Switch was the catalyst for the upcoming brand-new title, Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil. The Tower of Fortune received a better-than-expected response from gamers and ended up selling more than expected, which helped bring about a new entry.

Even more interesting, Spike Chunsoft revealed that the idea for Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil actually existed before Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate came to Switch. The team was unable to make that idea a reality at the time, but once The Tower of Fortune became a sizable hit, development on Serpentcoil got the go-ahead.
