The SNES could only dream of this!

Super Mario RPG is available now on Switch, giving the 1996 SNES classic a complete makeover top to bottom. While the visuals in this remake have gotten the lion’s share of attention, the game’s soundtrack has also been completely revamped for modern standards, and it’s a true joy to experience. Turns out you can now get something similar from the SNES original as well!

A mod for the Super Nintendo version of Super Mario RPG has done away with the game’s original soundtrack and replaced it with CD-quality remastered music. You can hear the end result of that mod above, which definitely offers an audio experience leagues beyond what you’d normally hear in any SNES game.

This mod is possible through the MSU1 custom coprocessor created by a very dedicated fan, and it enables playback of CD quality lossless audio (16-bit, 44.1kHz), as well as addressing up to 4GB of data, far more than a typical SNES cartridge could ever hold. This allows ROM hacks to replace the background music of games with high quality versions that can be seamlessly looped, stream data not already contained in the ROM file and even play full-motion videos.

Thanks to ibbsters for the heads up!
