Stay up Late, a new game studio devoted entirely to creating spiritual succesors to classic game franchises that are unlikely to ever see a sequel or remake, has announced their first title: Showdown Force. This is a spiritual successor to the NES classic Clash at Demonhead from Vic Tokai.

Showdown Force is a side scrolling shoot-em-up Metroidvania that will have all of the adventure and weirdness of Clash at Demonhead, which was a late-in-life NES release that didn’t get as much attention as it should have. The game is set to launch on Switch and Steam in late Feb 2024. The game features a 2.5D style and more resembles the Playstation 1 era of graphics than the NES.

“The idea is to create spiritual successors as if they were sequels created a little bit later on than the original. Often times you see games made that look like they were made in the same era as the original. We want to be a little beyond that. You saw a lot of sequels to classic games come out during the PS1/Saturn/N64 era and a lot of them were not very good. Some tried to make the jump from 2D to 3D and it didn’t really work out. So our idea is to keep the gameplay very similar but slightly update the visuals.”

Stay up Late’s Kickstarter for Showdown Force is now live, which you can check here.
