It’s always a risky endeavor creating a fan-made game that uses Nintendo properties, as the Big N loves to swoop in and squash the projects asap. Hopefully that’s not the case with Birdo’s Holiday Brawl, as it’s quite the gem of an NES throwback that’s well worth checking out.

Birdo’s Holiday Brawl, made by Super Squidoodle for the Christmas Sonic Amateur Games Expo, mixes gameplay from Super Mario Bros. 2 and Mario Clash, and most importantly, it puts Birdo front and center. As Birdo, you take out waves of enemies with your eggs, all while jumping between multi-tiered levels on each stage.

There’s even a story for Birdo’s Holiday Brawl that sees Birdo hosting a Christmas party that no one shows up to. When Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad ignore the invites, Birdo starts to think something is up, and that something happens to be Wart. That means it’s up to Birdo to save the quartet from Wart’s evil clutches, and her holiday party in turn.

You can check out more about Birdo’s Holiday Brawl on the official Sonic Fan Games HQ website.
