A sequel to the Super Mario Bros. Movie is about as close to a surefire thing as you can get. The first film was an astronomical success, breaking all kinds of box office records and bringing in an incredible amount of money for all parties involved. There’s absolutely zero doubt a sequel is coming, but we’re all still waiting for an official confirmation. Turns out Jack Black is as well.

Jack Black is the voice behind Bowser in the Super Mario Bros. Movie, and he’s quite eager to get back into the role. Unfortunately, according to a Variety interview with Black, he hasn’t gotten word on a follow-up just yet.

“It has been radio silence. The only chatter has been coming from me, and I don’t even know if I’m allowed to chatter. I’ve been chomping at the bit to get back to business.”

Again, an animated Mario follow-up will no doubt head to the big screen, but it’s clear Nintendo and Universal don’t want to rush things. Whenever that second film does get greenlit, we at least know Black will be ready to take on the King of the Koopas once again.

Will Black have yet another musical number in the sequel film? Only time will tell on that matter, but the pressure is on for Black to follow up the mega-hit “Peaches” from the first movie. That song had a run on the Billboard charts and is even up for Best Original Song: Motion Picture at the Golden Globes. Continuing with his Variety interview, Black shed some light on how “Peaches” came to be.

“They sent me a 30-second nugget of an idea, and it was hilarious. So I fleshed it out, added some lyrics and melody, and they loved it. And by God, they put it in the film. I couldn’t believe they did.”

It's hard for me to believe they didn't sit down and start fleshing out a sequel immediately after they saw how big a hit the first movie was. But maybe they did and the strikes brought things to a halt.

I hope we're not waiting TOO long. I watch the first movie frequently thanks to having kids in the house who love it, and I often think about all the new things they could do in the next movie.

Tbh, it’s hard for me to believe that they didn’t park cut ideas from the first movie into the sequel bucket during the first movies development. Like they do with their games.

You're probably right and they DID.

I'm convinced SOMEBODY is developing the sequel to one of 2023's most profitable movies, which dropped hints of a sequel at its end, and they probably just haven't involved the voice actors in that development yet.

The main voice cast are probably contracted for up to 3 movies anyways. That’s pretty common for actors for both live action or animation, especially when it’s a known franchise with likelihood of multiple instalments .
